Overview
E1 Voice & Data Over IP
The IP•Tube CEP GE1 encapsulates full and fractional E1 and TDM circuits, along with their framing and signaling bits, into IP packets. The IP•Tube CEP GE1's E1 Over IP, E1 Over Ethernet connection provides for the transparent interconnection of PBXs, E1 Channel Banks, Telecom Switches and E1 based communication systems via LANs, WANs, MANs, Satellite and Wireless Ethernet.
Enable One to Four E1 interfaces for E1 over IP Voice and Data
The IP•Tube CEP GE1 is available with one to four E1 interfaces and a 10/100 BaseT Full/ Half Duplex Ethernet Interface. The E1 interfaces have configurations that provide for independent protocol, compression, packet sizing, buffering, clocking, framing, coding and channel settings. Enable additional E1 Ports as needs expand using a software-based license key. The protocols supported are IPTube, CESoIP, and HDLCoIP.
IP•Tube CEP GE1 Management
IP•Tube CEPs isolate management and data plane functionality with the use of two separate processor modules. Management processor access is limited to SSH or SNMPv3 encrypted sessions that employ AES 256 bit keys and sophisticated NIST passwords. These sessions may be established after authentication via TACACS+ or Radius.
The independent Linux based management plane of the IP•Tube CEP ensures Critical Infrastructure Data is isolated from management network access. The Management Module uses internal serial ports to connect to the Data Plane processor.
Administration and User Logs are available with Syslog.
CEP management security features include:
- Administrative policies for adding, removing, disabling and renaming authorized users; limiting user access to assigned commands; and enabling only desired port numbers.
- User authentication directly or in conjunction with TACACS+ or RADIUS servers including RSA SecureID support for two factor trusted compliance.
- An SSH command interface encrypting management traffic with powerful 256 bit symmetric keys and NIST based passwords.
- Support of the SNMPv3 protocol for secure connectivity to SNMP element managers.
- In addition, administrative accounting data can be reported to syslog servers with accurate timestamps provided by an NTP source.
IP•Tube CEP GE1 Standard Features
Transparent Interconnect
The IP•Tube CEP GE1's transparent operation maintains the proprietary signaling required to support PBX features such as call conferencing, call forwarding, caller ID and SS7. Legacy phone equipment investment is preserved. Transparent support for Modem, Fax, or Data circuits. Voice quality is not compromised.
Assured Delivery Protocol
In order to assure high quality communications over links with intermittent or noisy performance, such as Wireless or Broadband over Power Line, the IP•Tube CEP GE1 employs Engage’s robust Assured Delivery Protocol with the following benefits:
- Packet out of sequence detection and re-sequencing
- Duplicate skipping
- Lost packet retransmission with configured delay.
Dual LAN Interfaces
All IP•Tube CEP GE1 models ship with dual 10/100BaseT Ethernet LAN ports. The dual Ethernet interfaces provide for:
- Management interface on LAN port 2 when LAN port 1 is connected to a VPN tunnel
- The LAN ports can be configured to support connections over 2 opposite ADSL links
- Alternator Option for load balanced SDSL interconnects
- Protector Option for Redundant Packet Path connections with Constant or Switch Over Criteria
Service Quality Packet Prioritizing
The IP•Tube CEP GE1 uses the Type of Service byte in the IP packets to prioritize the encapsulated E1 frames. The setting of the TOS byte can be used to ensure that the real time TDM data from the IP•Tube CEP GE1 is ensured high priority.
VPN Network Management
Interconnecting the IP•Tube CEP GE1 through a Virtual Private Network with a sufficient real time committed information rate ensures that the required quality of service is provisioned. The IP•Tube CEP GE1's second Ethernet interface provides a management port when the first Ethernet interface is connected to a VPN. Each Ethernet LAN interface features independent IP network configurations.
IP•Tube CEP GE1 Optional Features
Lossless Data Compression Option
The IP•Tube CEP GE1C detects idle/redundant data within each DS0 resulting in as much as 40 to 1 bandwidth savings. E1 over IP bandwidth is not consumed by silent or redundant circuits. Management of the IP•Tube CEP GE1 is accomplished with a Command Line Interface that is accessed through a Console or Telnet connection. Common templates provide for cut and Paste configuration.
Alternator Load Balancing Option
The IP•Tube CEP GE1-ALT Alternator option alternatively sends the IP packetized E1 frames on LAN 1 and LAN 2. The Alternator option enables fractional and full E1 circuits to be split over two IP WAN connections such as xDSL. The Lossless Data Compression option can be combined with the Alternator option to minimize the bandwidth required from the alternative paths. The cost of interconnecting E1 communication systems across packetized xDSL is a fraction of long distance leased E1 circuit costs.
SuperTube Option
Engage Communication super sizes IP•Tube's T1/E1 Circuit extension over Ethernet Packet networks. The Engage SuperTube option combines four T1/E1 circuits into one IP packet stream. The SuperTube is designed to support Cellular Backhaul’s tight latency requirements when multiple T1/E1 circuit interconnects are to be extended over Packet networks.
The typical way to extend T1/E1 circuits across packet networks is for each T1/E1 to be encapsulated into individual IP packet streams. The SuperTube Sized IP•Tube reduces the encapsulation overhead bandwidth and the packet frequency by 75%. The reduction of packet frequency enables network processors that are pressed with the low latency packet processing.
Cellular Backhaul has latency requirements that can be as stringent as four milliseconds. In order to rate adapt the clock and to take into account the jitter of the Ethernet buffering of the circuit extended packets is required. The frequency of the packets may need to be as low as 250 micro seconds to meet the latency and buffering requirements.
The packet processing for 4 bidirectional T1/E1 circuits at 250 microseconds packet interval full duplex is 32,000 packets per second. 32,000 packets per second full duplex is not something that 802.xx and WiMax wireless radios are able to reliably process. The SuperTube option cuts the packet processing requirement to 8,0000 packets per second which can be handled with ease by commercial grade 802.xx and WMax radios.
Protector Option
The protector option utilizes the second LAN interface as a redundant path for the interconnection of the IP encapsulated E1 Circuit. The extension of the E1 circuit has a fault tolerant link that is configured to always on, or with switch over criteria.
Protector Option -EnPRO
The Enhanced version has configuration parameters that enable a secondary packet path with high relative delay to primary path be synchronized. The packet sequence delay synchronization ensures concurrent redundancy with a high degree of error tolerance. Error free operation is accomplished when a primary or secondary Packet is not received and a redundant duplicate packet is available. The IP•Tube also supports the transmission of multiple duplicate packets to support Mission Critical Circuit extension with redundancy that is only limited by the bandwidth provisioned.
Pay-As-You-Grow Field Upgrades
The IP•Tube CEP GE1 are designed for Pay-As-You-Go growth from 1 E1 thru 4 E1s per IP•Tube CEP GE1. Customers can elect to economize initial network installations, by purchasing their IP•Tube CEP GE1 with a single active E1 port. As the network grows enable additional E1 Ports via a software-based license key. Field upgrade benefits are extended to our Industry-Best Lossless Data Compression. Just as E1 ports are field upgradeable, so is Lossless Data Compression. At any time, each E1 port on the IP•Tube CEP GE1 can be upgraded to Lossless Data Compression with a simple software-based license key installation. If upon installation, you determine that your IP•Tube CEP GE1s are best deployed with Lossless Data Compression, you're still in business with the per port field upgrade!

LANs
The most compelling option for the interconnection of E1 based systems is when it can be accomplished over a Local Area Network. The deployment of Fiber based LANS such as FDDI and Gigabit Ethernet, provides organizations with high performance and high quality bandwidth that is especially well suited for the interconnection of PBXs and Telecom Switches.
WANs
Wide Area Networks, that have sufficient bandwidth and Quality of Service provisioning, facilitate a very significant cost savings especially for Multinational Corporations. The IP•Tube CEP GE1C, a model with lossless data compression, detects idle and redundant data within each voice circuit resulting in a 56 to 1 bandwidth savings. WAN bandwidth is not consumed by silence or redundant circuits.
IP Cellular Back Haul
IP•Tube CEP GE1s are used to provide transparent interconnection of the base stations (BTSs), base station controllers (BSCs) and mobile switching centers (MSCs) over IP/Ethernet packet-switched networks. Supported access media include fiber, coax and fixed wireless. Cellular phone service providers are able to save substantially by converting to a packet-switch network from circuit TDM lease lines. The IP•Tube CEP GE1 has the duplicate packets transmission and reception feature that provides for resilient performance through a lossy interconnect.
Wireless Ethernet
Connecting phone systems across a wireless Ethernet connection has a return on investment that is measured in weeks. Eliminating the wired connection for the E1 based communication equipment is made possible with the IP•Tube’s E1 Over Ethernet capability.
IP/Ethernet Service Providers
Companies, that are able to provide IP/Ethernet access networks generate new revenue by offering traditional E1 leased line and private line services, such as:
Cable Operators
Cable operators connect traditional E1 leased line and private line services over their hybrid fiber coax (HFC) cable networks.
Metropolitan Area Networks
Metropolitan carriers with IP or Ethernet access networks deliver traditional leased line and private line services.
Utilities
Utilities generate new revenue by offering traditional E1 leased line and private line services over their fiber or power line networks.
Incumbent Carriers
Telcos reduce costs by delivering profitable leased and private line services over their flexible Ethernet infrastructures.
CLEC PBX Back Haul
The IP•Tube CEP GE1 provides CLECs with a way to back haul E1 DS0s from a customer’s phone systems over their Internet connection. The back hauled DS0s are connected to the CLECs phone switch for connection to the Public Switched Telephone Networks. Competitive Local Exchange Carriers are able to provide customers with a very economical alternative to the local Phone Company since the Local Loop charges for each phone line are consolidated.
International Toll Bypass
The IP•Tube CEP GE1’s most dramatic cost savings is when it is used for the international interconnections of TDM based telecommunication equipment. The IP•Tube E1 is interoperable with the European TDM standard E1.
