Engage Communication Integrates Advanced Encryption into Circuit to Packet Solutions
Aptos, CA – July 16, 2014

Engage Communication, a leading provider of specialized solutions that connect, protect and secure communication networks, announced the integration of powerful AES encryption into its market leading IPTube family of Circuit to Packet converters. The result, the highly secure BlackTube product line.

Increasing threats from both external and internal cyber-attacks has made securing networks a critical concern to most organizations. This is particularly true when information transported is sensitive in nature; often the case. Whether a Utility focused on NERC CIP 005 requirements, emergency service providers protecting critical HQ and field communications, financial and health care institutions transporting personal information, or an enterprise needing to secure sensitive corporate information; encrypting data, voice and video in motion is of prime importance. At the same time, these entities have to be concerned about dramatic changes occurring to Wide Area Network services.

Major network service providers are moving forward with plans to "end of life" circuit based networks, forcing a growing number of their customers to consider how best to move to an all packet network. Often, the cost and complexity of replacing existing on-premises infrastructure is daunting and a forklift equipment change impractical. A less disruptive and lower cost alternative is to retain legacy circuit equipment for the time being and connect it to the packet network with circuit to packet converters.

However, the conversion of circuits to packets can produce new security considerations. For example, circuit networks are generally believed to be less vulnerable than packet networks. In addition, the definition of security responsibilities may be less clear with a new packet “demarcation” point. Finally, it may prove costly to encrypt redundant packet connections from multiple data centers all the way to the circuit to packet conversion location, often a requirement for critical networks.

Responding to the growing need to convert circuit traffic to packets while addressing the security considerations introduced by this process, Engage Communication has developed the BlackTube. Integrating encryption into the Engage BlackTube circuit to packet converter means sensitive control and monitoring traffic is never “in the clear” on the packet network.  Additionally, since encryption is done at the source prior to transport over the primary or redundant packet networks, the expensive and complexity of external in line Encryptors for each path is eliminated.

“Providing both encryption and circuit to packet solutions for over a decade, along with over twenty-five years of serving our customers, puts us in a unique position to understand the pain points associated with securely migrating to packet networks,” said Mark Doyle, Engage President and CEO.

The result, a powerful combination of Engage’s market leading IPTube circuit to packet converters and AES 256 bit encryption appliance the BlackTube product family.

The
BlackTube SER RS232 secure serial and the BlackTube T1 and BlackTube E1 circuit to packet converters are currently shipping. The BlackTube family is developed, manufactured and supported in the U.S.
