NERC Compliance and Phenominal Return on Investment

Delivery of electricity is paramount.  Utilities are pressed enough by natural phenomena from the weather to maintain electrical service delivery.  Since 9/11 they have been pressed hard to take into account the effect of terrorist attacks on this most critical infrastructure.  In the event of a catastrophic failure of the Primary Control Center the Alternative Control Center(s) must continue to maintain operations with no intervention.

Engage seamlessly performs T1 and serial to packet conversion preserving the legacy SCADA equipment investment and maximizing ROI without a Forklift.

Engage Simplifies and Lowers the Cost of Redundant and Diversely Routed Control Centers; Helping Utilities Meet NERC Standards

Aptos, CA – September 18, 2012
Engage Communication, a leading provider of circuit emulation, circuit protection and encryption solutions, enables Utilities to adopt resilient Internet Protocol (IP) transport for redundant and diverse connectivity to  back-up Control Centers, while preserving existing Control Center and Remote Terminal (RTU) equipment.  The Engage solution accelerates deployment, reduces complexity, and saves time and money for Utilities considering implementing NERC reliability standards.

Recognizing the increased risk to the nation’s energy grid, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), with approval from Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), established the need for back-up control centers with redundant and diverse connectivity.  To assist in meeting these needs, Engage Communication has developed evolved models of its popular circuit emulation IPTube product line that facilitate critical Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition SCADA infrastructure protection.

The IPTube seamlessly connects existing RTU and control center equipment to an advanced IP infrastructure, provides diverse and redundant transport paths, includes critical equipment redundancy, and integrates the instantaneous detection of both the main and back-up SCADA Control Centers.

Both chassis-based central site and space efficient remote Engage IPTube units transparently convert a variety of existing SCADA communication protocol and link types into IP packets for transport between Control Center(s) and Remote Telemetry Units.  The conversion of SCADA information into packets emulates the behavior of telecom circuits to  ensure SCADA communication protocols: such as Modbus RTURP-570Profibus and Conitel, are delivered without error and the precise timing between polling requests and responses is maintained.

The advantages of IP transport between control centers and RTUs includes: lower transport costs of Ethernet Packet networks; highly resilient equipment and packet routing; and a thriving technology that will be available for decades to come.

Engage is excited to provide a unique solution that enables existing control center and RTU equipment to connect to this IP transport network, while delivering the necessary redundancy and diversity to implement a back-up control center infrastructure meeting NERC standards.
